PURPOSE
The US YOUTH SOCCER small sided games programs encourage teaching young players the sport
through the use of games, smaller teams and a smaller playing area. A player's first
soccer experience should be positive. Having FUN should be emphasized. Competitive
pressures should be discouraged.
BACKGROUND
Small sided soccer was derived from the fact that children grow at varying degrees with
regard to the development of their minds and bodies. At the ages of six through nine, the
time when most children come to our sport, they are either filling or lengthening their
bodies at different paces. Further, as their bodies are growing and changing, so too are
their minds. Some six year olds come with a very serious outlook on matters; others are
distracted by the passing of a butterfly or an airplane.
Another factor which came into play in determining that small sided soccer would benefit
young players was the social development of these players. Factors like family grouping
and/or placement within the family, coupled with the varied experiences they have had, are
influences on their social growth. US YOUTH SOCCER now encourages all of its member State
Associations to adopt small sided play for players under the age of 10.
DESCRIPTION
Young players really would like to have fun playing soccer, and that enjoyment is derived
from simply touching the ball as often as possible. Through the small sided programs,
coaches are encouraged to organize their training sessions for minimal discussion and
maximum opportunities for players to touch the ball. Short training sessions are far more
beneficial than long extended periods, and small sided games are still the best means of
spending time with the players. Coaches are also encouraged to keep things very simple,
emphasize the positive and try to get into the session themselves. Coaches should have
some fun too. |
